"Teruhide" 輝秀 Plane by Ishido Teruhide 石堂輝秀

My largest kanna, an 80mm 'Teruhide' by Ishido Teruhide (石堂輝秀), next to one of my smallest kanna, a bean plane (mame-ganna).

The Plane blade was made before 1957 as it has no Tokyo Plane Makers Union mark. The Ishido clan made/make around 8 planes on regular production. Blue Paper Steel #1 in almost all the planes except the higher grades, which are made with Swedish and a Special Swedish Steel. The "Teruhide" planes have been popular among carpenters in Japan and in the US for quite some time. 80mm planes are somewhat uncommon, new or used. The price jumps considerably after anything bigger than 70mm, as the forging process becomes drastically more difficult, and 70mm seems to be the competitive standard of smoothing plane.

This blade completes my collection of having examples of work by the Grandfather, Father and Son. I have a third Tonchinkan Ishido kanna in the mail that will have a place in the collection soon.

For now a link.
